Akwaaba or Welcome to Accra as you are start to hear the diverse languages of the people spoken throughout the capital city. Today, arrive in Accra from your overnight flight from the United States. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to the hotel. This evening, the group will meet for dinner.
After breakfast, we will explore Ghana's capital city including historical monuments, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Independence Square, learning about West Africa's first country to gain independence. After lunch we will shop in a local artists' market and Makola Market, the largest market in Accra. Today we will learn the craft of fabric dying. In the evening, we will visit with a seamstress and have the option of having customized clothing made for us in traditional Ghanaian fabrics.
We will travel to Kumasi, the Ashanti region, located in souther Ghana. We will visit Manhyia Palace to learn about and experience the rich history of the Ashanti people. if we are lunch, we may even get a glimpse of a current Ashanti chief. We will take some time to explore the region before we check into our hotel in the evening.
After breakfast we will head towards Cape Coast, capital of the central region of Ghana. We will tour two of the largest slave castles in Ghana and see the "Door of no return." In the afternoon, we will check in at our hotel and take some time to decompress and relax on the beach.
We will visit Kakum National Park, one of Ghana's most famous national parks and made up of mostly undisturbed and protected rainforest. We will explore the park from the tree tops via the canopy walk. On or way to Keta we will stop in Accra for a cooking lesson and lunch.
We will wake up this morning in a new region and culture of Ghana, an area dominated by the Ewe people. We will enjoy a full day of what the beach town, Keta has to offer. We will tour the area including historical forts and spend time relaxing on the beach. After lunch, we will enjoy cultural performances including drumming and dancing.
Our last full day, we will head back to Accra for a light and leisurely day. This is the time for any last minute shopping and relaxing by pool.
This will be our last morning together. We will meet for a group breakfast before being transferred to the airport.
